YOLANDA versus PHILIPPINES' DEMOCRACY

THIS IS MY ULTIMATE SONA.

Murag mao gyud ni diperensya sa Pilipinas. (I think this really is the burden of Philippines.) Knowing we're a country of 7000+ islands, which differentiates us from the rest of the world, the biggest responsibility to carry starts in the barangays. I am still confident with the president we have, even if he has shortcomings as to what people, including me, comment on him. For sure, he is trying his best to execute commands of sending help to the communities needing it. However, Pnoy cannot divide his body into 7,107 pieces just to see for himself whether or not the goods, the donations and all submitted projects he has to approve reaches the respective recipients. This is the main point of dividing the govt into 3 parts: The legislation, to make laws (laws that are relevant to society and not just attention-seeker self-gaining laws), Executive who approves and commands and the Judiciary, of which the power to give the necessary sanctions to whoever is not abiding by the set laws lies. Then the parts are splitted into branches. If we were in a country like America, or in any undivided land, i just think implementing such laws and maintinaing order will be a little bit manageable and projects shall also be a little more transparent to the public. But since we are like unformed bits of legos in Philippines, the higher order of our government has very little access to the country as a whole.

Just an example, I cannot personally complain to the president about how there are no risk management / awareness seminars in our place shall any calamity arise since he has not set foot in barangay Poog, Toledo City, Cebu.

It is the duty, (and to elaborate), of each head appointed from SK, to councilor to brgy capt, to mayor, congressman, governor, to know every tiny bit of needs in the region/area he covers so he doesnt play blind whenever doomsday comes. The officials may not be foretellers to know tragedies in the future but it is their obligation to foresee forthcoming crises and possible solutions. On the other hand, it is also our responsibility to address our problems, suggestions and concerns of the society to them. Now we are reaping the fruits of the seeds we sowed-- the price that we have to pay, (well, not totally.) *just saying. Yolanda has hit us right into our faces.

We had lost a lot of lives. These calamities are unavoidable but we can establish preventive measures to lessen wreckage, also, we can impose rules to keep things in order and most importantly, we can keenly organize measures to attend to urgencies and emergency situations BUT, ahead of time. The planning isnt supposed to be done days before or right on the day the monster natural calamity occurs. It's simple. Local govt officials are appointed to get to know their people, hear their needs ahead of time and relay to the higher power. then Set the goals, short-term and long-term. This is what we lack. but aside from this inefficiency, we Filipinos don't run out of reasons to complain about situations to blame problems with. We were thinking that our ultimate problem in Philippines is graft and corruption but in my opinion, it is just something hidden from a bigger picture.

EVERY FILIPINO MUST BE EDUCATED ABOUT HOW POWERFUL HE IS (or a small talk could suffice). This is the problem we have. We do not know our worth and to which extent can we practice the power we have. Not having this problem solved within ourselves means we are just fellow contributors of the bigger issues Philippines has. We're adding up to the existing problems by appointing incompetent or shall i say competent but less patriotic leaders. (not all, ofcourse.) This is something that we do not realize not until we see the horrifying effects right between our eyes that it's too late and there's nothing we can do to alleviate them.

Let us remember, we have the freedom to complain, rant, say what we wanna say, but it isnt righteous to just blame all the combined problems of over 96million people to just one person or a few (those rotten corrupt leaders are the exemption--i could totally put all sucky words on them). All matters concerning the people of the Philippines are supposed to pass thru the hierarchy of government, and we should be well aware of that. It's not just about Pnoy or Mayor Voldemort and Mrs.Minchin. it's about all of us.

I hope all of what had happened will be enough for us to take a minute to reflect if I, or you, as an individual and a citizen of the country is in any way, doing something wrong or worse, not doing anything at all. We are if not the principal, the accomplice to making horrible situations happen. We cannot come completely clean in this tragedy. What we can do though, (as of the moment), is ponder upon everything and answer to this acute problem we have through helping.

After we get back to our feet soon, we should slowly put into actions solutions to improve how we live. firstly, we have to know ourselves better, our needs and our strengths & weaknesses to recognize who's the right person to appoint for governance. In this way, we, as people will still bear the power of our land even unti the earth's end. Secondly, we must be vigilant. Lastly, demand transparency--every law, every project should be all about US and shall be all for us to see. This is our right. Afterall, we are a democratic country with a govt of the people, by and for the people.

now we know there's really no point in blaming anybody because we are to blame ourselves at some point.

For whoever reads this, i hope someone does, I cannot say that i am totally right on this matter but I am pretty sure that I am also not totally wrong.

-i am no writer para ma organize ni ako thoughts. kahibaw kong gubot but this was forever in my mind sukad naka attend kog classes sa social studies, polsci, econ, ug REED. well, i am also just a guilty but still a caring citizen of the Philippines.
